Beauty For a Better Life Hairdressing, a promising career for young Lebanese

She considers them her children. In Beirut, L'Oreal's Communication Manager for the Levant countries (namely Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Palestine) Samira Franjieh, visits the Academy located near her offices at least once a week to keep an eye on the few teenagers, both boys and girls, who train to become hairdressers.

Everyone is happy to offer her a blow dry or coloring. She encourages all her staff to get their hair done at the Academy. The Matrix brand educator, for his part, is deeply involved in the technical training program.

These young people, orphans or born into families with great difficulties, all taken care of by SOS Children's Villages, have been handpicked to attend this free learning school, which opened in spring 2014, for six months. Designed according to L'Oréal's Foundation, Beauty for a Better Life's model, training here is quite selective in order to avoid dropouts and ensure that every young person is well assisted. "They have a painful history and often dropped out of school. They need to be surrounded," asserts Samira.

Partner hair salons are thoroughly involved. Among fifteen of the first graduates, 75% were hired and others have found an internship. "They are proud to send me pictures of the clients they have styled", she says, laughing. In a refined country such as Lebanon, hairdressing has such prestige that these students will have no trouble emigrating to neighboring countries.

At the dawn of the third session starting September 2015, L'Oréal plans to open a training school for aesthetics. "As long as we are able to supervise each student, as we already do for hairdressing," says Samira for whom involvement is the key to success. A golden mum!
